Charles Driscoll McLean, Sr. was born on April 30, 1931 in Raeford, North Carolina to the late Rosella McMillian McLean and Albert G. McLean. He attended Upchurch High School and joined Bridges Grove AME Zion Church at an early age.
Charles moved to New York City in 1949 to find work. He was drafted and did a stint in the Army from 1951-1953 for the Korean Conflict with an honorable discharge, PFC. He met Mary Lou Moore in 1953 and married on July 3, 1954 and from that union had four children: Gail, Carol, Charles Jr. and Zina.
He worked for the New York City Sewer Department for thirty years, building and maintaining New York City's sewers. He retired in 1986 as a Department Supervisor. Charles was active in the community. He joined the Masonic Brownsville #10 Lodge in 1969 and became a Master Mason. One of his roles as a mason was to deliver food to seniors. He served on the Bardwell Avenue Patrol, where he helped to secure the neighborhood in Queens Village, New York.
He was known as "Daddy" to his daughters and "Pop" to his son. His passions in life were for his wife and children. He loved family, he spent time with his siblings and told his children to look out for one another. He was an ever-present father to his children, a father every child wished they had. He followed baseball and was an ardent fan of, as he called them, ''The Bad News New York Mets." Daddy believed in hard work and no excuses. He usually had two jobs so that he could take care of his family. He encouraged all of his children to do and be their best.
